Metabolic reactions and flux are analyzed and quantified by stable-isotope labelling followed by NMR- and MS methods to determine the isotopologue distribution in metabolic products ("isotopologue profiling"). On this basis, the metabolism in bacteria, archaea, plants and animals is elucidated for the development and optimization of novel drugs and biotechnological processes. NMR and MS are also used to detect the formation of biomolecules under prebiotic conditions.
